Nation launches new campaign to promote patriotic role models

Prime Minister officially launched the national patriotic role model campaign for 2011-2015 at the closing ceremony of the 8th National Patriotic Emulation Congress yesterday.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung officially launched the national patriotic role model campaign with the theme Solidarity, Dynamism, Creativity and Emulation for the Fulfilment of Socio-Economic Development Goals for 2011-2015 at the closing ceremony of the 8th National Patriotic Emulation Congress in the capital city yesterday.

He said the role model movement should go hand in hand with the campaign to follow President Ho Chi Minh\'s moral example.

He asked every Vietnamese citizen to compete to improve their performance and to make the movement a part of their everyday lives.

"Role models are shining examples for people to follow. Through the movement, we hope we\'ll become more productive. As a result, Vietnam will become a wealthy, healthy and civilised society," said Dung.

The Prime Minister said one of the objectives of the campaign was to help the country overcome difficulties and challenges to achieve its political and socio-economic targets.

He said Vietnam had set a target of 7-7.5 per cent for economic growth in the next five years, with per capita income by 2015 standing at US$2,000 – an increase of 1.7 per cent against 2010. By 2020, Viet Nam would become a primarily industrialised nation

"To achieve these goals, it is imperative to continue to be creative and improve the quality of the role model movement. We vow to make the movement fair, democratic and transparent."

In his capacity as the Chairman of the Central Emulation and Award Board, PM Nguyen Tan Dung asked all agencies involved, particularly their leaders, to take their responsibility in monitoring and evaluating the movement seriously to ensure they followed the line of the Law on Emulation and Commendation.

Dung expressed his deep thanks to the generations of Vietnamese people across the country for their devotion and contributions, including those who gave their lives for national independence, freedom and reunification as well as in the present process of renewal and rapid and sustainable development.

The 8th Patriotic Emulation Congress concluded yesterday after two working days.

Some of the delegates at the congress met with President Nguyen Minh Triet later yesterday.

The 118 people represented delegates from the armed forces, workers, Vietnamese overseas and foreigners.

The Party and the State appreciated the great and practical contributions made by the delegates, said the President.

"Achievements made by the delegates represent a strong will, great determination, intelligence and spirit of the Vietnamese people," he said.

He expected that their patriotism would inspire future generations.
