The People’s Committee of Quang Tri recently ratified a project worth of VND 1,000 billion for the clearance of unexploded mines and ordnances.
Within the next five years, the project will clear mines in 1,000 hectares of seven suburban districts and towns.
Priority will be given to the areas which are badly covered by unexploded mines and ordnances.
Via the project, the local authority hopes to minimize effects of mine explosion, protect lives and properties of local people, clean land, and boost infrastructure and socio-economic development.
In addition, the project also aims to raise awareness of the community and pupils of bomb and mine prevention.
According to Quang Tri’s statistics, around 10% of remaining bombs and explosives are deep underground.
From 1975 to August 2008, the locality had 7,016 victims of bombs and mines, including 2,177 children of less than 16 year old, with 2,614 deaths and 4,402 injured people.
