A company that specialises in dyeing fabrics was caught red handed releasing toxic chemicals and waste-water into the environment.

Black untreated waste-water was discharged into Duong River
Chemicals used for dyeing fabric were not preserved in the right manner

The company, Ha Nguyen Limited, is located in Hanoi and was releasing its waste into the Duong River.

On September 22, Hanoi environmental and waterway police coordinated with Gia Lam Department of Police to conduct a raid at Ha Nguyen Limited located in Yen Vien Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.

They discovered toxic chemicals and dyeing water from four machines was being spilt all over the floor and running into a big pipe where it was directly discharged into the Duong River.

Since late August, the environmental police were aware of environmental violations the company was committing. The dye company is owned by Nguyen Van Thanh Ha, of Ninh Hiep Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.

The river water has been black and filthy, carrying an unbearable smell in the area where the waste was being released. In their very simple warehouse of chemicals, many kinds of chemicals and colouring powders were scattered all over the floor.

Two wells had been dug which took water from Duong River to use for their production.

The police’s initial investigation revealed that the company did not make any commitment towards protecting the environment, did not have a waste-water discharging permit, waste usage permit or registration of the owner of the toxic waste-water discharging source.

Hanoi’s Department of Natural Resources & Environment has taken waste-water samples from the factory to test.

The case is under further investigation by the environmental police.
