A month-long campaign to prevent drinking among road users was launched in Ha Nam province on August 31 by the National Committee on Traffic Safety, the World Health Organization and some others.

At the launch ceremony, Nguyen Trong Thai, Vice Head of the committee, said Vietnam’s traffic safety project for the 2010-2011 period will focus on raising public awareness of the regulations on the amount of alcohol for drivers, training traffic police on breath-testing, and launching campaigns to fine those violating the law.

The project aims to minimize the number of accidents and resulting casualties.

Alcohol abuse is one of the main reasons behind traffic accidents in Vietnam. The National Committee on Traffic Safety says alcohol is involved in more than 70 percent of accidents that on average claim over 30 lives and injure 25 others everyday.
