Cities waiting for shade at red lights

Authorities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City hope that a plan to plant trees at intersections with traffic lights will reduce traffic violations.

Authorities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City hope that a plan to plant trees at intersections with traffic lights will reduce traffic violations.

During the record heat wave, drivers jostled against each other to have a space under the shade.

The plan involves using trees to create shade for drivers in an effort to block enough sun that drivers will be less tempted to violate traffic laws, especially on hot days.

Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, directed the Hanoi Green Trees-Park Company to conduct necessary research and surveys over intersections with traffic lights installed in the city where trees can be planted while traffic flow and safety can be maintained.

Nguyen Thi Hien Luong, Vice Director of Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Transport also directed relevant agencies and the Ho Chi Minh Green Trees-Park Company to conduct surveys and implement the plan.

The lack of shade at intersections likely attribute to violations and officials hope that additional shade will help to limit the problem.
