The oil leakage occurred near the store house of PETEC Trade and Investment Company’s Hoa Hiep PETEC Oil Factory in Kim Lien 5A Area, Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District, Da Nang.
As soon as this information was made public, the local police immediately came to dismiss the oil scooping frenzy as well as restore security and order as locals were trying to take the oil for themselves.
According to initial reports, the oil was leaked from the pipeline that had pumped it from the Viet Tin 01 Ship which was anchored at the Lien Chieu Port to a store house of the Hoa Hiep PETEC Oil Factory. One section of the pipeline was found to be very old and rusty and while under hard pressure of the pump, had broken and caused the oil to leak and stagnate into small pools around the area.
The factory reportedly ordered the pump to stop being used when the leakage occurred and is now working in coordination with relevant authorities to carry out treatment measures at the site. The amount of leaked oil that was collected manually is estimated to be 600 litres.
If this leakage is not stopped and treated properly, the oil will adversely impact the local environment, especially when the coast is just about 50 metres away from the leakage site.
