Air-con rentals a cool new trend

Many families in HCMC are now able to enjoy cool air at home by leasing air-conditioners rather than buying new ones.

During these hot summer days, many families are now able to enjoy cool air at home by leasing air-conditioners rather than spending dozens of millions of dong buying new ones.

Many people are renting air-conditioners

Many people living in Ho Chi Minh City feel that they only use air-conditioners in the summer and they have to spend money on maintaining their air-conditioners regularly for the whole year. In addition, repair fees are expensive. Now, companies are charging about VND2 million ($105) to rent a unit for 3 months, which is much cheaper than buying a new one.

Han living at Phan Dinh Phung Street, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City said, “It's a waste of money to buy a new air-conditioner when I only use it only for 2 or 3 months out of the year. This summer will last longer than others so I decided to rent one.”

Le Van An, living at Doan Van Bo Road, District 4, Ho Chi Minh City shared that he bought a new air-conditioner at nearly VND12 million ($631) but it started having problems after 3 years. He spent money fixing it 4 times but it does not work. “Now I just want to hire one. I felt very annoyed when my air-conditioner broke. I spent only VND2.4 million ($126) to rent a good one for 3 months.”

Companies understand the demands of keeping cool during the hot summer and they offer rental services from the beginning of the season.

A representative from Hoang Long Refrigerator Industry Company said that this was a new service but it was launched at the right time and has attracted a lot of customers.

The rental price ranges from about VND500,000 ($26) to 1 million ($52) for the first month and it decreases VND100,000-150,000 ($5.2-7.8) in the following months.
