A Spokesman for the US Department of State has confirmed Vietnam’s commitment to expanding its programme of nuclear power for civil use in a responsible manner and its support for non-proliferation goals and the disarmament of nuclear weapons.
His press release on March 30 highlighted the memorandum of understanding signed by the US Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Michalak, and Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Le Dinh Tien, in Hanoi on the same day.
Also on March 30, the Minister Counsellor-cum-Vice Head of the Vietnamese representative mission to the United Nations, Pham Vinh Quang, said at the annual meeting of the UN Disarmament Commission that Vietnam unreservedly supports efforts to remove all nuclear weapons and prevent the proliferation of these weapons, and considers strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) the best means to achieve this end.
Mr Quang stressed that as a member of the UN, Vietnam pledges to fully carry out its duties and responsibilities in compliance with the NPT regulations.
Vietnam is a signatory to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and is joining other ASEAN countries to ensure that Southeast Asia remains a region free of nuclear weapons.
