Holding on to childhood dreams

Overcoming challenges, a young woman has never given up her dream of becoming a doctor.

Overcoming challenges, a young woman has never given up her dream of becoming a doctor and is an example of resilience for her friends.

Thao wants to become a good doctor

Thanh Thao began working at age 10 to support her sick mother and uncle but she was always good at studying in school. Now she is a second year student at Hai Phong University of Medicine.

Living in a very old and poor house covering less than 20 square meters full of bags, used papers and bottles. There is only one bed in the house located at Lieu Ngan Hamlet, Ngu Thai Commune, Thuan Thanh, Bac Ninh.

Thao shared her story with us. She was abandoned by father as a newborn. Unfortunately, Thao’s mother suffered from kidney failure when she was 10. She became the only source of income for the family. She also had to take care of her uncle who suffered from a mental disease and calcified spinal column.

Thao’s mother tried to work as hard as she could to earn money for covering daily expenses but her health became increasingly worse. Eventually a doctor diagnosed her with serious kidney dysfunction and her health was too weak to undergo any surgery.

Despite such difficulties in life, Thao still tried to go to school daily. She had no time to study at home so she tried to learn lessons at school by heart.

The resilient girl has never lost her faith in life. She dreams of becoming a good doctor with an aim of curing her mother, her uncle and those who don’t have enough money for treatment and hospital fees.

Now, she is closer to that dream. She is a second year student of medicine. Thao always finds time after class to go to work to earn money for her schooling fees.

Although she has to work hard to earn money, has been awarded a scholarship at her university. In 2008, she was granted a scholarship from the Australian Charity for the Children of Vietnam (ACCV). She said, “I will spend the scholarship money on treatment fees for my mother and my uncle. I will never give up my dream no matter how difficult it is to achieve, I will keep trying my best.”
