An elderly elderly couple living in a poor and dusty house haven’t had the Tet spirit for a long time because their only son passed away.
When Tet arrives, children often return home to visit their parents and enjoy Tet together, but this aging couple bring in the holiday with their 3 dogs and they don't have enough money to buy anything for Tet.
They are Le Van Tiep, 76, and Nguyen Thi Hot, 77. Their only son died 4 years ago after an accident.
The old couple keeps 3 dogs which they treat as their children
Tiep was just discharged from hospital because he suffers from heart and kidney dysfunction. His health is very weak due to these two diseases and Hot is forced to be the breadwinner of the family by selling lottery tickets.
She earns only about VND20,000 ($1.08) per day. She spends some on their 2 meals and saves the remaining in case they become sick. “It’s lucky to have 2 meals per day. Sometimes we don’t have anything to eat. I got up at 5AM to prepare breakfast and then go to sell lottery until the afternoon. We haven’t had dinner for a long time and are used to it,” said Hot.
This year they spent Tet in a hospital. They spent all the money which they have on hospital costs and didn’t have a penny left to prepare for Tet.
It’s said that losing parents is losing your past while losing children is losing your future. What will become of the couple if they can’t earn any money?
