About 700,000 poor households (2.9 million people) who are in dire need of food have enjoyed government financial support of VND 200,000 ($11) each on the occasion of the Lunar New Year festival.
In addition, according to the Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, about 1.3 million disadvantaged people have received gifts worth 200,000 VND each from the government.
Apart from the government support, local authorities have granted gifts to the poor households and disadvantaged people. Ho Chi Minh City took the lead with VND 41 billion ($2.2 million), followed by Hanoi with VND 18 billion ($970,000) and Quang Nam, VND 14 billion ($756,000).
Local organisations, enterprises and benefactors have also visited needy people and offered them gifts for Tet.
