Excessive waste forces manioc plant to shut down again

After DanTri's recent reports of excessive waste at a manioc plant, local authorities have decided to cease operations there once again.

After DanTri's recent reports of excessive waste at a manioc plant, local authorities have decided to cease operations there once again.

Vi Van Dinh, chairman of the People’s Committee of Nghia Dan District, Nghe An Province, has decided to suspend all operations at the manioc plant.

The manioc processing plant, owned by Nguyen Trung Hai, processes 28 tonnes of manioc per day.

People in Binh Minh Hamlet told DanTri that the plant has left all sorts of waste that has negatively impacted lives in the community. But the local authorities had not done anything to prevent the plant from producing waste for the last 7 years.

Hai admitted that, “My plant polluted the environment several years ago, but not now. Since early this year, the toxic waste has been placed in 8 tanks and processed for 35 days before being released outside.”

“The plant was forced to discontinue operations in April 2009, but they improved their waste processing system and were allowed to resume operations,” said Le Duc An, Manager of Natural Resources and the Environment Department.

After reopening, the community complained of continued waste coming from the plant leading it to be shut down yet again.

Locals dug a trench in the road which prevented vehicles from approaching the plant

Speaking to DanTri on January 7, Vi Van Dinh said he reported the case to the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Nghe An Province. The water will be tested with an aim of checking how polluted it is. Then the issue will be resolved in order to see if the plant can reopen in a way that doesn't fuel the anger of the community.
