The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a plan on expanding the Saigon Hi-tech Park by 587 ha in District 9.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved a plan on expanding the Saigon Hi-tech Park (SHTP) by 587 ha in District 9.

Together with the current area of 326 ha, the expanded SHTP will form a complete economic zone, including a hi-tech production area (over 196 ha), a supportive industrial area (more than 14 ha), and a R&D and training area (over 50 ha).

For over 7 years in operation, SHTP has attracted 38 domestic and foreign-invested projects with the total registered capital of US $1.7 billion, including the US $1-billion Intel semi-conducting chips plant slated for coming into operation in the second quarter of 2010. Other major investors here include Nidec, Jabil, Sonion, Datalogic, FPT Software and EVN Telecom.

SHTP currently has 13 projects in operation and 13 projects under construction. Enterprises in the park have employed over 8,000 people and created an accumulative export turnover of US $318 million by 2009.
