Liem (world No. 17) trounced Indian player Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (world No. 8) after 65 moves. He ultimately came first in the Grandmaster Triathlon category.

The win helped the Vietnamese GM earn four more points, 5.5 points higher than Haik Martirosyan of Armenia in second position.

Liem received a bonus of CHF10,000 and 10 points for his Elo rating, thereby boosting him up to 16th in the world.

This is the third consecutive time that the Vietnamese grandmaster, Elo 2741, has won the Biel Grandmaster Triathlon title following his previous wins in 2022 and 2023.

The Biel International Chess Festival is an annual chess tournament which takes place in Switzerland. It consists of two events, the Grandmaster Tournament, which is held with a round-robin system; and the Master Open Tournament (MTO), which is held with the Swiss system.

Liem has been the No. 1 chess player in Vietnam over the past 16 years. He became the world blitz chess champion in 2013 before becoming the Asian champion in 2019.
