The railway route linking Hanoi and the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has reopened after a suspension due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi.

According to Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR), to date, 45 landslide points on the Hanoi-Lao Cai railway line have been repaired. The entire route has been opened allowing VNR to provide free transportation of 700 tonnes of relief aid to flood-hit areas.

In the landslide-affected sections, trains are allowed to travel at 5 km/hour only to ensure safety.

Trains were halted on the Hanoi-Lao Cai railway line from September 7 because of Typhoon Yagi. Since September 9, torrential rains have hit mainly northern mountainous localities, including Lao Cai and Yen Bai.

Dang Sy Manh, Chairman of VNR’s Board of Directors, said that 700 tonnes of relief goods have been loaded onto trains at Song Than Station in Binh Duong Province and and other stations along the North-South railway route for being carried to flood-ravaged areas to Yen Bai and Lao Cai.

Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways and VietJet Air have also offered free transportation of relief aid to flood-ravaged areas.
