Con Dao is famous for its pristine beaches, lush forests, and unique historical sites related to wartime.

Besides some famous temples and pagodas, Hang Duong War Cemetery, which is the resting place of over 20,000 Vietnamese soldiers during wartime, is also a must-visit spot for tourists to Con Dao. Visitors often come to those places with many offerings, including votive papers.

Between July 1 and September 30 this year, Con Dao District authorities provide green offering baskets every Saturday at the Con Dao Special National Monument Area. This is an activity in the campaign to minimise burning votive offerings at historical sites and change habits during commemoration activities by using environment-friendly products.

The campaign aims to spread the message of not using votive offerings and single-use plastic products, ultimately ceasing the burning of votive offerings at the Con Dao Special National Monument Area.

Local authorities have introduced baskets containing only environmentally friendly items, such as flowers, fruits, silk, and leaf conical hats. Votive offerings or single-use plastic products such as foam, nylon, and plastic bottles are not allowed.

The "Green Offering Basket" will be piloted at various historical sites throughout the district for three months until September 30 and then extended to all weekdays from 2025.

The campaign has received support from the World Wide Fund for Nature Vietnam and relevant organisations. Its goal is to promote and encourage residents, tourists, and tourism businesses to limit disposable plastic products and votive offerings and replace them with environmentally friendly products in their rituals.
