Luong Van Linh, 32, said his wife, Le Thuy Vinh, 31, gave birth to their first son three weeks ago in the 26th week of pregnancy.

"The baby weighed just 900g and was so weak that doctors urged us to rush him to a higher-level hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for better care," Linh recalled. "I'm afraid that knowing about our son's situation might make my wife shocked, so I decided to take him to the Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital myself."

Vinh only knew about her son being treated in Ho Chi Minh City several days later. Despite weak health, she soon came to him to see that he was suffering from various health problems, including heart disease, pneumonia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis, which were all life-threatening.

"My son has just undergone the first heart surgery, and doctors said that his condition is ok now, but he would need long treatment," the father said. "My wife is still fragile, and she keeps crying a lot, worrying about our son's treatment as we have run out of money."

Linh adds that he has received some financial support from their relatives and friends and also had to borrow more from many people to cover treatment for his son.

"Following the heart surgery that cost over VND30 million, we're having to pay hospital fees of between VND4-5 million a week and more for medicine," he said. "My wife and I are both teachers with monthly salaries of approximately VND8 million, and so we're facing difficulties in following treatment for our son. We hope that people will help us save him."
