The popular messaging app Zalo and many online newspapers in Vietnam went down on September 23 as the VNG Corporation suffered technical problems.

Dozens of other websites from online games to online payment websites were down during that time. Many online newspapers including Thanh Nien, Tien Phong and VOV were also inaccessible.

Nguyen Minh Tuan from Hanoi's Cau Giay District said he hadn't been able to use Zalo and was worried. Nguyen Thi Thuc from Phu Tho Province said she often used Zalo to sell clothes online but had been unable to access the app for three hours.

The incident was caused because VNG's Data Centre stopped working. It is speculated that VNG's system was hacked so they must take a lot of time repairing the system.

On September 24, Le Hong Minh, VNG's CEO, the service provider for dozens of websites, publicly apologised for the incident and said that all services had returned to normal.

"This is the most serious problem until now which had badly affected our partners and customers. We'll take all responsibility and want to apologise to everyone. We promise there will not be a similar incident in the future. We also want to thank for the help from other parties and for the understanding from the customers."

Depending on the services that VNG will contact customers and discuss the damage caused by the incident.

This is not the first time VNG's system was down this year.

On April 26, over 163 Zing accounts for Zing music and game were hacked. All information including name, passwords and birthdays were made public. On the next day, VNG released a statement, acknowledging the incident but saying that there had been no damage.

Zalo had over 70 million accounts as of October 2017.
