The representatives of three families including Nguyen Thi Sanh, 24, Nguyen Xuan Duong, 27, and Sam Thi Nhien, 28, have sent letters to refuse the new houses.

According to the letters, all the members of the three families in the village had died in the landslide in September, and their relatives have no need for the new houses.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Secretary of Phuc Khanh Commune Party Committee, Vu Thi Tu, said that they have received letters from relatives of three families which said they had declined the houses.

"Despite their great losses, the representatives of these three families have refused the houses so that other people can have them," the official said. "We'll work with concerned agencies to deliver the houses to families in need," the official said.

Earlier on December 15, authorities of Lao Cai Province held a ceremony to deliver 40 new houses in a resettlement area to the families who lost their homes in a devastating flood that buried Lang Nu Village in September.

Located on a hill, the resettlement area includes 40 stilt houses of 96 square metres each, built following the traditional architecture of the Tay ethnic group.

Forty households in Lang Nu Village lost their homes to horrific flash floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Yagi on September 10, which left 60 people dead, 15 injured, and seven missing.
