Nguyen Thuy Van, 35, had symptoms of high fever during her seventh month of pregnancy. Although, she took medicine, she did not see any improvement. After being taken to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in HCM City, she was diagnosed with the A/H1N1 flu virus and was in critical condition.

Despite provided with respirator right after being hospitalised, the mother still faced respiratory failure. She was too weak to be taken to Tu Du Hospital for caesarean section. So, she had to take the caesarean section at the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The 1.6 kilo baby was then moved to Tu Du Hospital for respiratory failure.

Van’s husband, Vu Chi Cuong, 40, said that the coupled got married 15 years ago. Their eldest child Vu Quoc Dung, 14, suffers from mental diseases. Their second child Vu Tram Anh is 6 years old.

Cuong said that his family advanced VND20 million (USD909) of the two hospitals for the treatment. Now, he has to stay at the hospital to take care of his wife and new-born baby, so he can’t sell lottery for earning money. 

The premature baby 

He even had to sell his motorbike and borrow money from different sources to pay the treatment fees. This is too small compared to the daily treatment fees for her wife and new-born baby which is estimated at VND7 million as Van does not have health insurance.

Dr. Duong Bich Thuy from the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that the treatment for Van would take at least 7-10 days, while her baby could stay at hospital for around three weeks more.
