Nguyen Thi Phuong, 58, lives with her 85-year-old mother in Hanoi's outlying district of Ba Vi. Phuong never married due to her poor health.

Phuong's heart problems have recently worsened and doctors have told her to have surgery as soon as possible. However, Phuong has said that she would have to refuse treatment due to her lack of money.

"I've had to depend on my parents as I can’t do l work," Phuong said. "And my parents are also poor. My father died a long time ago and my mum has become old and weak. I don't have brothers and sisters or relatives here. And me and my elderly mom have depended on local authorities and neighbours over the past few years."

Phuong said that she suddenly had a bad fever a month ago but couldn't seek treatment as she didn't have any money left.

"After I fainted, some neighbours raised money to help take me to the hospital where doctors said that my heart problems have become serious and I would need surgery as soon as possible to save my life. But I can't find VND100 million for the operation. Now I want to go home and spend my last days beside my mum."

"Phuong urgently needs surgery to save her life," doctor Chi said. "The patient said that she couldn't afford the operation so we hope that she will receive support from donors.
