A whale weighing over 10 tonnes has been found dead drifting onto a coast in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

According to a report from the Co To District People's Committee, the whale’s body was found near Tinh Yeu Beach on Monday afternoon by some local people who then reported it to the authorities.

"The whale might have died several days ago, with its head and tail decomposing," the committee said. "We've recovered the body and buried it following local customs.

In February, local authorities and residents of the southern central province of Binh Dinh Province managed to rescue a whale that was found washed up on Quy Nhon beach.

Residents of coastal areas in Vietnam believe that whales help fishermen who are at sea, therefore they often rescue the animal when they run aground or bury dead them in solemn ceremonies.

All along the Vietnamese coast, whales are revered as bringers of good fortune for those at sea. Temples and festivals worshipping the creatures are commonly found in communities close to the sea.
